Text and Images

Digital tools that allows students to use text and images, such as graphic design tools are great a way to increase student engagement and interest. 

CANVA

Canva is a great graphic design tool for text and images to use in the classroom. It offers a plethora of templates to create posters, marketing material, social media posts, infographics, etc. It is suitable for all learning types, and allows the student to express their creativity through creating original works of art. It, also, provides opportunities for differentiated with the vast number of different graphics available. Providing choice can increase students’ motivation (Robb, 2020).

Differentiation

  • Learning Styles:

    • Allows visual learners to create visual representations of their knowledge

    • Kinesthetic learners learn by doing and Canva allows students to practice what they learned by create customized works

    • Auditory learners  can add videos to enhance their learning

 

  • Not only does it meet the needs of all learning styles, but it allows each student to express their creativity which increases their engagement and participation.

 

  • Students can choose the graphic that best fits their interest from the various types of graphics, such as posters, infographics, pamphlets, etc. According to the Scholastic website, providing choice can increase students’ motivation (Robb, 2020).

ISTE Standards

Innovative Designers:

ISTE Standard 4A: “Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2020).

 

  • Canva is a great tool to use create artifacts to support what the students have learned and can showcase their ideas.

Creative Communicators:

ISTE Standard 6B: “Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations”

ISTE Standards 6D: “Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2020)

 

  •  Canva allows students to create original work that showcases their creativity and ideas.

Special Considerations

You have to have an upgraded paid subscription for some features and graphics. However, there is a good amount of graphics available on the free version. Also, Canva offers Canva for Education, which allows students and teachers access to the paid features. However, teachers have to apply and be approved for Canva for Education.
