Screen Capture Tools

Screen Capture Software

Screen capture software allows you to share your screen with students. Teachers can easily create videos to share with students in a virtual or hybrid setting.

Screencast-O-Matic

With many schools moving to distance learning due to COVID, Screencast-O-Matic is a great media and technology tool that can be used to create videos to provide instructions to students. Teachers can share a PowerPoint or other information on their computer screen with the students. The students are not only able to see the information you are presenting, but they can also see the teacher as she presents . This gives them the feeling that you are in the class with them teaching the lesson.

Screencast-O-Matic and Differentiation

  • Several lessons can be created based on students' learning ability and style

  • Allows students to view video at their own pace

  • Allows student to playback video as many times at they choose

  • Allows students to work independently and teacher can focus on students that need additional assistance

  • Allows the students to have the freedom of creating their own learning goals

ISTE Standards

Empowered Learner:

ISTE Standard 1A: ““Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2020).

  • As stated above, this tool can help students meet this goal because it allows students to watch the videos at their own pace to meet their personal learning goals. Some students may prefer to watch the entire video in one setting, while others students with a limited attention span may prefer to watch the video in increments.

ISTE Standard 1D: “Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2020)

  • In order to operate Screencast-O-Matic independently, students have to develop technology operations skills and will have to troubleshoot any errors they may encounter while watching the video. Once the students learn to use Screencast-O-Matic, they can transfer their knowledge they gained by using this tool to other screen-capture software.

Special Considerations

There will be a Screencast-O-Matic watermark on the video with the free version. To remove this watermark, you have to obtain a paid subscription . The Subscription fee is fairly reasonable and can be paid on a monthly or yearly basis.

A subscription is also required to make videos longer than 15 minutes. (However, as a rule of thumb, videos should not be more than 15 minutes. If you need to make a video longer than 15 minutes with the free subscription, you can always make multiple videos.)
